From the Bohai Sea to the East China Sea: Hydrogen Energy Empowers the “Hydrogen-Pure” Development of Ports in Eastern Germany

Guided by the “dual carbon” goals, ports—serving as pivotal hubs for cargo transport—are characterized by high energy consumption and emissions in operations such as heavy machinery use and container trucking, making them a key battleground for hydrogen-based substitution.
On June 10, the National Energy Administration issued the “Notice on Organizing Pilot Projects in the Hydrogen Energy Sector,” which proposes focusing on ports to integrate technologies and apply them across the entire value chain of “renewable energy–based hydrogen production–hydrogen storage/energy storage–multi-energy complementarity.” The initiative aims to build zero-carbon energy systems centered on hydrogen, using the full hydrogen value chain—from production and storage to transportation and utilization—as a hub. It also seeks to explore mechanisms for direct green electricity connections and realizing carbon reduction value, thereby promoting the large-scale development and replacement of conventional energy sources with renewables at ports.

East German Hydrogen Energy Initiative: Demonstration Projects in Bohai Bay and Zhoushan Port
Amid this green wave, Yantai Dongde Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Dongde Hydrogen”) has been deeply involved in projects such as the first hydrogen refueling station at Bohai Bay Port of Shandong Port and the first integrated hydrogen refueling (and hydrogen production) and natural gas refueling comprehensive energy station at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, providing practical examples for the large-scale application of hydrogen energy in the port industry.

Bohai Bay Port’s First Stop: Weifang Port Accelerates Zero-Carbon Development
The first hydrogen refueling station at Bohai Bay Port of Shandong Port is one of the sub-projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s major demonstration initiative, “Hydrogen to Every Home,” and covers an area of over 600 square meters. In 2024, Dongde Hydrogen equipped the Weifang Port hydrogen refueling station with its self-developed and manufactured DZ22-200 diaphragm compressor unit. With a designed daily hydrogen-filling capacity of 500 kilograms and a routine storage capacity of 300 kilograms of compressed hydrogen, it can meet the daily hydrogen demand of four hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks and other vehicles operating within the port area. “As the first hydrogen refueling station at Bohai Bay Port of Shandong Port, this facility fills a critical gap in hydrogen infrastructure development in the Weifang Port area and marks a significant acceleration in the region’s efforts to build a ‘zero-carbon port,’” said a spokesperson for the Weifang Port Authority.

Zhoushan Port Integrated Comprehensive Energy Station: Green Hydrogen Production and Multi-Energy Integration
At the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, located 1,000 kilometers from Weifang Port, the first integrated hydrogen refueling (and hydrogen production) and natural gas refueling station has been built. Dongde Hydrogen supplied this station with DZ22-500 diaphragm compressor units, capable of a rated hydrogen production capacity of 500 standard cubic meters per hour. The station can produce over one tonne of green hydrogen daily, with a purity as high as 99.999%, primarily to meet the hydrogen and natural gas refueling needs of terminal equipment in the port area, including green-energy container trucks, forklifts, stackers, and vessels. This comprehensive energy station at Zhoushan Port, which integrates hydrogen production, hydrogen refueling, and LNG refueling capabilities, has also become part of the demonstration project under the National Key R&D Program “Multi-Energy Integration Technology and Integrated Application for Water Transport Ports and Ships,” providing support for the large-scale future deployment of green hydrogen in port areas.

Port Hydrogenization: A Core Front in the Dual Carbon Strategy and Policy-Driven Development
From the Bohai Bay to the East China Sea, Dongde Hydrogen’s hydrogen energy projects implemented at ports align with the requirements outlined in the national “Notice on Organizing and Carrying Out Pilot Projects in the Energy Sector for Hydrogen Energy,” such as “building diversified hydrogen energy application scenarios” and “promoting innovation in hydrogen energy technologies and equipment,” thereby completing technological validation and practical deployment in the port sector.
“In the future, Dongde Hydrogen Energy will continue to explore integrated development models for hydrogen energy and smart ports, creating replicable and scalable green port solutions to support the achievement of the ‘dual carbon’ goals and promote the establishment of a clean, efficient port-based hydrogen energy industry system,” said the head of Dongde Hydrogen Energy.
East Germany: Empowering National Hydrogen Pilot and Demonstration Projects with Hydrogen Energy Equipment and EPC Engineering
As the domestic manufacturer with the most comprehensive hydrogen‑energy equipment industrial chain and a provider of integrated hydrogen solutions, Dongde Hydrogen has supplied over one hundred sets of hydrogen‑energy equipment to refueling stations worldwide. Building on its leading position in compressors, Dongde Hydrogen has leveraged its industrial synergies in recent years to offer the market stable, reliable “integrated hydrogen production and refueling solutions,” “comprehensive energy station construction solutions for oil, gas, hydrogen, and electricity,” and “natural gas–hydrogen blending application solutions.” It is also the first company in China to bring a 90 MPa high‑pressure diaphragm compressor to commercial use.

In recent years, Dongde Hydrogen Energy has participated in numerous national and provincial hydrogen energy demonstration projects across China, including Hainan’s largest integrated energy refueling demonstration station, Liupanshui, Guizhou’s first integrated hydrogen energy station, the Southwest region’s first water electrolysis–based hydrogen refueling integrated station, Xinjiang’s first integrated energy station, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port’s inaugural integrated hydrogen energy station, Weifang Port in Shandong’s first hydrogen refueling station, Shandong Province’s first green hydrogen storage demonstration project, and Eastern Heilongjiang’s first green hydrogen production base, thereby actively promoting the development of China’s hydrogen infrastructure and hydrogen industry.
