Case Study | Dongde Hydrogen Energy Powers the Nation’s First Zero-Carbon Hydrogen Service Area

In April 2024, China’s first on-site hydrogen production, storage, and combined heat and power project at a highway service area was launched at the Gaomi Service Area along the Qingdao–Yinchuan Expressway. To date, it has been operating steadily for one year. Reportedly, this initiative is one of the sub-projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology’s major demonstration program, “Hydrogen into Ten Thousand Homes.” The project’s core equipment—the diaphragm compressor—is supplied by Yantai Dongde Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a nationally recognized “Little Giant” enterprise specializing in niche, specialized, and innovative fields, fully demonstrating Dongde Hydrogen’s leading hydrogen technology capabilities and comprehensive service expertise.

As the nation’s first zero-carbon hydrogen energy service area, the Gaomi hydrogen production, storage, and combined heat and power demonstration project utilizes photovoltaic power generation to produce hydrogen via water electrolysis. The high-pressure gaseous hydrogen is then stored, and a hydrogen fuel cell combined heat and power system is deployed to store excess photovoltaic electricity as hydrogen energy. At night, this stored hydrogen is converted back into electricity through the fuel cell system. Additionally, the waste heat released by the fuel cells supplies domestic heating for the service area, while a heat pump system provides cooling in summer and heating in winter.

For this project, Dongde Hydrogen Energy selected its DZ20-100 diaphragm compressor series and, in light of the high‑speed service area application scenario and combined heat and power requirements, undertook specialized customized R&D and design. This ensures an uninterrupted fuel supply for fuel cells, thereby establishing a robust energy security framework for service areas.

[30% Smaller Footprint] The compressor and chiller are highly integrated, reducing the footprint by 30% and optimizing the water circuit layout to lower energy consumption.

【Mitigating Abnormal Risks Caused by Photovoltaic Fluctuations】Supports dynamic power allocation from 20% to 100%, features a built-in redundant pressure-reducing pipeline system for fuel cells, automatically switches to hydrogen fuel power when photovoltaic generation is interrupted, and includes precise metering capabilities.

[Operating Noise ≤75 dB] The container structure integrates thermal insulation and soundproofing, making it suitable for deployment in high-speed service area environments.

[Ensure Zero Safety Hazards in Production] Leveraging advanced hydrogen concentration tracking technology and a high-precision temperature and pressure monitoring system, the system responds to anomalies within milliseconds. With dual safeguards—proactive alerts and intelligent shutdown—it keeps high-risk operations running safely as usual.

[Reduced O&M Costs] Differential pressure monitoring of the air intake filter automatically prompts maintenance schedules, while an industrial-grade AI control hub enables a self-decision-making system, achieving fully unmanned operation across the entire process.

The Gaomi “Zero-Carbon Hydrogen Energy Service Area” has established a hydrogen-centered energy supply system, implementing a low-carbon technological pathway for powering the service area. Calculations show that, once operational, the project will achieve an average annual carbon reduction of 500 tons. This initiative has become China’s first “zero-carbon service area” to integrate on-site hydrogen production with combined heat and power generation, setting a leading benchmark nationwide.

As the domestic manufacturer with the most comprehensive hydrogen‑energy equipment industrial chain and a provider of integrated hydrogen solutions, Dongde Hydrogen has supplied over one hundred sets of hydrogen‑energy equipment to refueling stations worldwide. Building on its leading position in compressor technology, Dongde Hydrogen has in recent years fully leveraged its industrial synergies to offer the market stable, reliable solutions, including “integrated hydrogen production and refueling,” “construction of comprehensive oil‑gas‑hydrogen‑electric energy stations,” and “natural gas–hydrogen blending applications.” It is the first domestic company to localize the application of 90 MPa high‑pressure diaphragm compressors, and has participated in numerous national and provincial hydrogen demonstration projects across China, such as Hainan’s largest integrated energy‑supply demonstration station, Liupanshui, Guizhou’s first comprehensive hydrogen energy station, the Southwest region’s first integrated water electrolysis hydrogen production and refueling station, Xinjiang’s first comprehensive energy station, Ningbo Zhoushan Port’s first integrated hydrogen energy station, Weifang Port in Shandong’s first hydrogen refueling station, Shandong Province’s first green hydrogen storage demonstration project, and Eastern Heilongjiang’s first green hydrogen production base. Through these efforts, Dongde Hydrogen is actively advancing the development of China’s hydrogen infrastructure and hydrogen industry.
